Plans for Sheffield City Centre’s first indoor padel club approved
Club de Padel and Capital&Centric will soon bring the world’s fastest growing sport to a long-dormant brewery after plans were approved by Sheffield City Council.
Club de Padel have reached a lease agreement with Capital&Centric and are moving in to give the historic Cannon Brewery site a new lease of life whilst the developers start to restore the brewery to its former glory.
Capital&Centric, custodians of Cannon Brewery nestled in the Neepsend part of the city, are reimagining the historic buildings into a buzzing community of 550 homes but have now carved out space for the city’s first indoor padel club.
Following the roaring success of its debut club in Manchester, Club de Padel have now made tracks into the Neepsend district and will create five panoramic padel courts, alongside a club shop, coffee and bar.
The Council approved the social impact developers’ plans for Cannon Brewery last July, to create a lush urban park and a new public square with shops, cafés and spaces for pop-up events, alongside the new homes.
Tom Wilmot, joint managing director of Capital&Centric, said:
“Bringing padel to Cannon Brewery, is a great way of getting people back into the disused spaces whilst we get stuck in to transforming the site.
“It’s no surprise the team have enjoyed huge success so far, so we’re expecting it to be another big hit here in Sheffield. Padel is a great way of meeting new mates and keeping fit, which perfectly fits with what we want to harness within our communities, especially at Cannon Brewery.”
James Wigglesworth, Co Founder of Club de Padel added:
“We’re looking forward to opening our second site in this incredible space. Sheffield has all the ingredients for us, we’d been looking for a site here for a while and this building in Neepsend with bags of character felt perfect for our urban, inclusive clubs.”
Capital&Centric boasts a long and successful track record of delivering quality neighbourhoods, with loads of green space and creative design and it is aiming to attract some £200 million of investment into the city across several regeneration sites.
Canon Brewery is one of eight live construction sites for the developers who invest £3million a week in regeneration and are continuing their expansion into new towns and cities across the UK, like Buxton, Wolverhampton, Gateshead, Stoke-on-Trent and Cambridge.
The developers are working with South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and Sheffield City Council to bring Cannon Brewery forward. The combined authority awarded a £11.67 million grant to kick-start the regeneration last year.
Elsewhere, Capital&Centric have completed Eyewitness Works in Sheffield’s Milton Street and its new build neighbour Brunswick. They’ve repurposed the historic former cutlery works into rental loft apartments and townhouses, alongside hidden gardens for residents. The space was also the set for Channel 4’s prime time Big Interiors Battle series in 2023 featuring AJ Odudu.
