Lucky local could win an apartment by name-checking their favourite indie traders

We’re giving people the chance to win a brand new apartment as part of a massive competition.

And all people have to do to be in with a chance of winning the unrivalled prize is name-check their favourite independent businesses.

The Instagram competition has been launched by social impact developers Capital&Centric, who are planning to give away an apartment, rent-free for a year. It’s all part of their hunt for operators to move into their neighbourhoods currently being built in Stockport, Farnworth and Stoke-on-Trent.

It’s not the first time Capital&Centric have given away such a prize. Last year Channel 4’s The Big Interiors Battle – fronted by Big Brother host AJ Odudu – saw an interior designer contestant emerge victorious and bag an apartment at their Eyewitness Works community in Sheffield.

Now, they’re giving everyone else a shot. To enter, people just need to head to @capitalcentric on Instagram and tag who they think are the independent gems that they’d love to see expand – whether a coffee shop, bar, brewery, restaurant, deli or lifestyle store. Then, when a tagged trader moves in, a lucky person who suggested them will be picked at random to nab a newly-released apartment rent free for a year.

The massive prize is aimed at uncovering the hidden gem operators that have a loyal following and may want to be part of curated community of traders at up-and-coming spots - like the £60 million Weir Mill neighbourhood in Stockport town centre.

John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, said:

“We want the power of the people to help us find the most cherished indie businesses to move into our communities. Everyone has their favourite spot for a flat white, a go-to place for pizza, or a hidden gem bar where the vibes are unmatched. In return for people spilling their neighbourhood favourite secrets, we’re giving away an apartment totally rent free.

“It’s a pretty life-changing prize, not only giving the lucky winner the chance to move into one of our neighbourhoods, but eliminating what’s most people’s biggest monthly bill for a whole year. Whether it helps someone save for a rainy day or tick some experiences off the bucket list, it’ll be a massive opportunity for the winner.”

The winner will have the choice of where they want to live, whether:

  • Weir Mill, Stockport: A creative neighbourhood under the town’s viaduct arches, with the historic mills restored into apartments; new build homes; work spaces; and new public outdoor spots.

  • Farnworth Green, Bolton: A town centre neighbourhood with apartments and family townhouses alongside shops, a community hub and public green.

  • Goods Yard, Stoke-on-Trent: A destination neighbourhood right next to the main line train station and canal, with a below ground foodhall warehouse, lush community gardens, and industrial-style apartments with amenities.
